EVERDELL STRATEGY GUIDE

Everdell is a worker-placement and tableau-building game set in a woodland valley, where you send critter workers to gather resources and play cards that build your city. The goal is to construct the most valuable city of up to fifteen cards by the end of winter.

STEP 2

HOW TO PLAY

PLACE A WORKER

On your turn you take one of three actions. Placing a worker sends a critter to a location, the Meadow, a Journey space, or onto one of your own Destination cards to gather resources, draw cards, or gain other benefits. Workers stay put until the next season.

PLAY A CARD

You may play a card from your hand or from the Meadow by paying its resource cost, adding it to your city tableau. Cards come in five types: Traveler, Production, Governance, Prosperity, and Destination. Many cards give discounts or free plays through their listed connections.

PREPARE FOR THE NEXT SEASON

When you have no workers left to place, you may prepare for the next season. Doing so returns all your workers to you, adds new workers to your supply, and triggers your green Production cards again. This moves you from spring toward winter.

BUILD YOUR CITY

Your city holds up to fifteen cards, so choose which ones earn a place. Combos between critters and their matching constructions, event bonuses, and Journey points all feed your final score as the seasons advance.

★ WIN CONDITION

The game ends for each player when they finish the season of winter and have no workers left to place. Players then total the points from cards in their city, achieved events, Journey points, and purple Prosperity card bonuses, and the player with the most points wins.

STEP 3

QUICK TIPS

  • Build Production cards early so they pay out again every time you change seasons.
  • Use construction cards to play their matching critters for free.
  • Do not rush through seasons; extra worker placements are precious.
  • Fill your city toward the fifteen-card limit with high-value cards, not filler.
  • Watch the Meadow for cheap or combo-friendly cards before opponents grab them.
  • Chase Events and purple Prosperity cards, since their end-game points add up fast.

STRATEGY NOTES

Everdell blends worker placement with tableau building inside a charming woodland setting, and its central tension is time. You only get so many worker placements before the game ends, so every action has to earn its keep. Sending a critter to gather resources, taking a card from the Meadow, or activating one of your own Destination cards all compete for the same limited pool of workers, and learning to squeeze value from each placement is the core skill.

The season structure gives the game its rhythm. You begin in spring with just a couple of workers and unlock more as you prepare through summer, autumn, and into winter. Preparing for a new season is a powerful moment because it returns all your workers and retriggers your green Production cards. That means front-loading your city with strong Production engines pays off over and over, while waiting too long to build them wastes their potential.

Cards are the heart of your city, and the interplay between critters and constructions is where the game rewards planning. Many construction cards let you play a matching critter for free, so a well-sequenced pair effectively doubles your output for a single cost. The five card types each pull in a different direction: Travelers give quick boosts, Production cards generate resources, Governance cards lower costs, Destinations create new worker spaces, and purple Prosperity cards reward you for the variety already in your city.

Because your city caps at fifteen cards, space is a real constraint. Late in the game you must decide whether a new card is worth more than what it would displace, and cheap filler that felt useful in spring can become dead weight by winter. Strong players keep an eye on this limit from the start and aim for cards that both help their engine now and score well later.

Events and Journey spaces round out the scoring. Completing Special Events and sending idle workers on Journeys convert effort into end-game points that often decide close games. The most prosperous city is rarely the biggest one; it is the one where resources, combos, events, and Prosperity bonuses all reinforce each other by the time winter arrives.
