THE FULL READ

Spirit Island, designed by R. Eric Reuss and released in 2017, is a cooperative board game that pits players against colonial invaders on a mystical island. The game supports 1 to 4 players and offers a complex gameplay experience, typically lasting between 90 to 120 minutes. With a complexity rating of 4 out of 5, it’s designed for players aged 13 and up, making it well-suited for both families and hardcore gaming groups.

To begin, each player selects a spirit from the island, each with unique powers and abilities. The objective is to use these powers to defend your island from the encroaching invaders by building defenses, terrorizing the colonizers, and converting the local Dahan population to become your allies. Players must work together, using their distinct abilities synergistically to create effective strategies against the invaders, making for a deeply engaging experience.

The community sentiment surrounding Spirit Island is overwhelmingly positive. Many players have shared their journey of learning and mastering the game on forums like Reddit. For example, one player discussed how, after initially struggling to win, they immersed themselves in mastering specific spirits and eventually found success, highlighting the game's learning curve and depth. Another dedicated group mentioned how their game nights revolved solely around Spirit Island for two years, indicating its replayability and how it can overshadow other games in a collection.

However, Spirit Island is not without its drawbacks. Some players express frustration at the steep learning curve, especially for newcomers. The intricate rules and mechanics can be daunting, leading to potential barriers for casual players. There are also concerns about analysis paralysis, as players may take extensive time deliberating the best course of action for their spirits, which can slow the game down considerably.

For those new to Spirit Island, some strategies can enhance the experience. First, embracing the cooperative nature is vital; communication is key. Discussing each spirit’s strengths and weaknesses early on can help craft a shared strategy. Additionally, playing with a mix of experienced and new players can balance the experience, with veterans guiding novices. Start with a few spirits and work your way up to understanding their interactions before combining them for more complex gameplay.

In conclusion, Spirit Island stands out as a modern classic in the board gaming world. Its unique combination of cooperative mechanics, strategic depth, and thematic immersion creates a rich experience that rewards thoughtful play and collaboration. While the initial learning curve might deter some, the payoff for those who invest the time is a deeply satisfying conquest against colonialism.

We've been stuck playing Spirit Island for the last two years

Two years ago my main group decided to buy Spirit Island with all of its expansions. And I kind of regret it. We have not been playing anything else since then. The game is so incredibly good that it feels like there's no reason to pull out anything else anymore. There's nothing in any of our collections that we would…
